This question came in from Fred via our contact form:
Q. Are people who are covered by Medicare due to disability eligible for Obamacare?
A. According to the Medicare website, those with existing Medicare coverage won’t be affected by the Affordable Care Act. You’ll retain the same benefits you now receive. Obamacare does expand Medicare in some states to cover more of the population, but that doesn’t alter those who are already receiving benefits.
However, you will get some extra benefits through Medicare due to the Affordable Care Act:
- You’ll get more preventive care—services such as colonoscopies and mammograms will now be covered without a fee for the Part B coinsurance or deductible. Plus you’ll get a free annual “wellness visit.”
- You’ll get a 50% discount when buying Part D-covered brand-name prescription drugs. The discount will be given to you automatically at the pharmacy.
- Your doctor will be given extra resources to make sure your care is consistent.
- The Medicare Trust fund will a 12-year extension, until at least 2029, thanks to reductions in waste, fraud and abuse, and Medicare costs. That means future savings for you on premiums and coinsurance!
